As foodies, we love nothing more than exploring new trends on the food scene. And over the years, we have experienced some memorable ones. Who can forget the cronut? What about the edible flowers trend? And of course when food trucks came into play and disrupted the restaurant scene.
So what do we have to look forward to this year? While there are a lot of trends headed our way, here’s a look at a few that are creating lots of buzz.
1) NORTH AFRICAN FLAVORS
While flavors from the Mediterranean and Asia Pacific have become more common over recent years, we’ve been watching cuisine from North Africa start to rise in popularity. And this is the year it’s supposed to make a big appearance on the food scene. As consumers become more adventurous, bold new flavors will continue to replace more traditional fare.
2) NON-ALCOHOLIC COCKTAILS
As people become more conscious about their alcohol intake and generally more interested in healthy alternatives, watch for the rise of the mocktail. While the non-alcoholic side of the bar menu was never something to get excited about, things are about to change. Get ready to see more interesting mocktail options with inspired and complex flavors, house made sodas, syrups and the use of fermented ingredients.
3) OAT MILK
Non-dairy alternatives to milk have been around for a while, but the big trend to be on the lookout for this year is oat milk. Packed with fiber, this creamy alternative can be enjoyed on its own, frothed and poured over your coffee, or in your morning cereal bowl.
4) NON-DAIRY ICE CREAM
There may already be a lot of options on the market, but this year keep an eye out for lots of new “ice cream” concoctions made from ingredients such as bananas, avocados and even oat milk.
5) CBD INFUSIONS
Cannabis has been a hot topic for years, but now we’re really starting to see it make an appearance in the kitchen with CBD infused foods and beverages showing up more and more on menus from coast-to-coast.
So now that we know what we have to look forward to this year, we’re excited to head on over to one of our favorite annual events, SIAL Canada
to get to see them all first hand. SIAL Canada takes place in Toronto on April 30th to May 2nd and celebrates the quality and diversity of the Canadian Food Industry. With all the major players brought together under one roof, it’s a great opportunity to discover the latest trends and innovations in food, from up-and-coming brands to the leaders in the industry.
Each year, SIAL awards a grand prize to the most innovative new food and beverage product and this year’s finalist are making us drool. From Yummy Dough
- a vegan chocolate chunk cookie dough that is both edible and bake-able, to Lofbergs
- an oatbased creamy iced coffee drink, to Abokichi
- an instant fermented miso soup, our taste buds are ready to sample them all.
Here’s to a delicious 2019!
